You want the most out of your denture and we want you to get the most out of your denture. Here’s a tip to help you keep your denture in tip-top shape. Don’t brush it with toothpaste! The enamel on natural teeth is very hard, harder than the acrylic teeth used to make your denture. What that means is that toothpaste will wear your denture down over time. It will happen slowly and you might not even realise it. However, the denture that was made specifically for your mouth, almost like a puzzle piece just for you, will get worn down. Does a puzzle piece still fit if the edges are bent? If you want your denture to last then don’t brush it with toothpaste. Always remove your denture from your mouth to brush it, you can use a toothbrush or a denture brush, and then brush it with a denture cleaner of your choosing. For our clinic’s personal recommendations on cleaners give us a call.
When you go to bed at night, you should brush your denture and then soak it for the night in either water or a denture cleaner of your choice. It is not recommended to sleep with your dentures in, it’s a good time to let your gums/gingiva rest. If you notice that your denture has some white stuff building up on it that doesn’t come off when you brush then bring it in to a denture clinic to have it cleaned. We have specialized equipment and tools to properly remove the build-up. What is that build-up? It’s tartar (also called calculus). It can build up on your dentures just like it can on your natural teeth. If you ever have any questions about denture care and maintenance just give us a call. We are always happy to talk about dentures!
