Have you ever suddenly developed a sore spot with your denture? What a pain! Unfortunately, sore spots can appear any time. Often times they are caused by a bit of food getting caught between your gums/gingiva and your denture, something like a small piece of an almond or a small seed can find its way under the denture and irritate the gums. These types of sore spots require only time to heal. And, luckily, the mouth heals fairly fast. If your denture is still new to you then developing a sore spot is quite normal. This type of issue can typically be fixed with a quick trip to the denturist and then just waiting a few days for it to heal.
There are so many nerves in the mouth that even a small sore spot can be really painful. If you develop a sore spot and you head to the bathroom mirror to check it out, you may be surprised at the small size of it considering the pain it gives you. Sometimes you won’t be able to see it at all. But just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. A Denturist can typically find the problem very quickly and fix it just as fast. So, how do you know when to call your Denturist about a sore spot? Like many things, it varies. It’s difficult to give a general answer to that question because everyone is different. If you have a sore spot that’s bothering you then the easiest thing to do is call the clinic and talk about it with our staff. We can advise you on what to do based on the situation. Sometimes simply discussing it with us will help you find the solution and other times a quick appointment will be the fix. Of course, if you’ve had your denture for twenty years and it’s causing sore spots, it might not be as simple to fix as a quick adjustment appointment. The bottom line is that we understand that a sudden sore spot under your denture can really drag your day down. If you’re concerned with it then give us a call, that’s the kind of thing we’re here for!
