Do I need a referral to see a Denturist?
You don’t! Denturists in BC are available to help people without a referral from a Dentist. If you are interested in having dentures made then your consultation is only a phone call away. And, consultations at the Comox Denture Clinic are free.
How often should I have a check up?
It’s a good idea for denture wearers to visit their Denturist once a year for a check up. Denturists are specifically trained to examine your mouth and your denture to ensure that the two are working together in harmony.
I’m getting all of my teeth extracted, how long do I have to wait before I can get dentures?
There are two options for cases like this. We can fabricate an immediate denture for you that can be placed by your Dentist at the time of extraction. An immediate denture means that you are never without teeth but it will require adjustments. An immediate will become loose as your gums/ridges heal. And, once the gums are fully healed, the immediate denture will need to be rebased so that it can fit the new shape of your mouth.
The second option is to wait for the gums to heal before making a denture. This usually means waiting a few weeks before dentures can be made for you that are going to fit well. If a denture is fabricated before the gums are completely healed then it could become loose. Your Denturist is able to monitor your extraction sites and let you know when your gums are ready to support a long-term denture.
Are dentures just for looks?
No. Dentures aren’t just for looks. One of the biggest benefits of dentures is usually the changes in the ability to eat. Different teeth serve different purposes when you eat. Some teeth are more for tearing food while others are for breaking it down so it can be swallowed and digested easier. If you are missing teeth it could be affecting your nutrition uptake and digestion!
How long will my dentures last?
Unfortunately, they don’t last forever. We would love to make you a product that would last you a lifetime but your body changes over time and, also, the denture materials will eventually wear down. On average, dentures last about five years. Processes like rebases can help your denture last longer. Talk to your denturist about how to maintain your denture at home to get the most out of it.
